Quick Summary: Top 3 Targets
Honorable mention: surf kingfish, spot & croaker (bloodworm/Fishbites); red drum returning to Assateague beaches.
Conditions Snapshot
Water is in the fall-transition zone: cooling water is what turns on tog, sea bass and rockfish over the next 3–5 weeks. Buoy 44009 is offshore of Delaware Bay; inland bays and the canal run a bit different and clearer on incoming tide.
Bite Meter (regional)
Meter is my read of the most recent available reports, not an official index.
📍 Indian River Inlet & Bay
Species HOT bluefish, Spanish mackerel GOOD flounder (mostly unders), triggerfish SLOW offshore tuna
- Baits/rigs: Flounder: Gulp or soft plastic jigs tipped with squid strip, minnow/squid combos on bottom rigs. Triggers: sand fleas, clam, small hooks. Mackerel/blues: small spoons and Drone spoons trolled at dusk.
- Where: Inlet channel and bridge-pillar structure, both walls; bay-side flats edges on moving water. Charters report fish holding in about 90 ft offshore.
- Timing: Moving tide, especially the incoming for clarity; evening trolling trips are producing. Night sessions have historically been best at the inlet.
- Notes: Charters warn of 3–4 ft seas on some recent days. Indian River Marina's last posted report (Aug 20–21) covered the Dockside & IRM Tournament, 58 boats; offshore then had white/blue marlin releases, yellowfin, bluefin, bigeye, wahoo, tilefish, scattered mahi.
- Charters: Crab Burner Charters, Sea Monkey Charters listed among top-rated.
📍 Rehoboth Beach (surf, pier, nearshore)
GOOD bluefish, croaker, sea bass, flounder inshore SLOW offshore tuna
- Baits: Bloodworm or Fishbites for kings/spot/croaker; finger mullet and cut bunker for blues; sand fleas and green crabs for tog on structure.
- Timing: First light and last light, ideally around a tide change.
- Offshore: Mahi had a strong August; late-season tuna is inconsistent. Local charters recommend 6-hour or full-day trips, with 90 ft a productive depth.
- Charters: Crab Burner, Makai, Captain Jack, Master Sportfishing.
📍 Rehoboth Bay
- No current dated bay-specific report found. Based on the regional pattern, expect late-season flounder on channel edges and structure, small blues, and croaker/spot on bloodworm as water cools.
- Best on a moving tide, with Gulp on a jig head or minnow/squid rigs near drop-offs.
📍 Lewes: Canal & Outer Breakwater
- No current dated canal/breakwater report found. Seasonal pattern: tog on the breakwater and harbor walls, spot and small blues in the canal, and flounder drifting near Roosevelt Inlet.
- Tog baits that work: sand fleas, green crabs, quartered blue crab on the heavier end.
- Cape Henlopen pier historically holds spot on bloodworm.
📍 Ocean City, Maryland
HOT bluefish, Spanish mackerel GOOD sheepshead, triggerfish, flounder, sea bass, surf kings SLOW tuna
- Inlet/jetties: Sheepshead and triggers on sand fleas, green crabs, shrimp and squid.
- Surf/Assateague: Kingfish, spot, croaker on bloodworm or artificial alternatives; red drum returning to the beaches.
- Nearshore: Keeper flounder on offshore reefs; sea bass and flounder on wrecks. Soft-plastic jigs tipped with squid strip. Bluefish and Spanish mackerel out front, kings in the mix on Drone spoons.
- Offshore: Canyons giving marlin and some tuna, below seasonal expectations; blueline and golden tilefish on deep-drop. Mahi still on midshore pots.
- Season note: Some charter outfits (e.g., OC MD Fishing) finished their final 2026 trips Sept 25 with a 4.7 lb flounder and a 200 lb sand shark in the back bay as season highlights.
